Another Laurel from Bhutan!

Another Laurel from Bhutan!

Lopons from India: Glimpses of Their Lives and Work in Bhutan

Lopons from India: Glimpses of Their Lives and Work in Bhutan, is an anthology prepared and published by His Excellency Thakur S. Powdyel, former Education Minister of Bhutan. An incredible book! The book is filled with torrents of mutual love and gratitude by the brothers and sisters of India and Bhutan, which was ceremonially launched on May 12, 2025 at the Nehru-Wangchuk Cultural Centre in Thimphu. As I received my complimentary copy on May 7, 2025, I felt overwhelmed with joy and ecstasy and celebrated my emotions and excitement of the laurel with my family and my friend, Mr K.C Jose, Kerala.

As I plunged into reading, the book drove me crazy and I continued till the finish. The deeper I dived, the crazier I felt to know more about my two motherlands, India and Bhutan, their celebrated heroes and their great services and sacrifices in shaping Bhutan into a blissful country under the visionary leadership of our divine Kings. The book has empowered me with numerous new eyes and new minds to see the beauty of the two great nations, which is far higher and holier than what I learned during my tenure in Bhutan. The publication testifies to the standard of gratitude of the great nation – Bhutan. The reflection of the adage, “Gratitude is not only the greatest of all virtues, it is the mother of all virtues” is seen throughout the book. The book also echoes: “Civilization is not built by machines but by values.”

Thank you, friends, for sharing your adventurous and inspiring memories. Your reflections have intensified my thirst to read and learn more of the experiences of journeying together in Bhutan. I feel just a drop of the ocean of multidimensional support and services and untold challenges and hardships experienced by our brothers and sisters of both the nations has been shared in the present edition. I fervently desire and pray for the second volume of the commendable work, in which some unsung teacher-heroes find a place.

I wish and pray that the book is made a compulsory reading for the educators and learners of both the grateful nations for our mutual benefits. The love-laden book has deepened, heightened and widened the expanse of my kinship with the kingdom and her lovely sons and daughters.

My family and I offer our sincerest gratitude and obeisance to the Tsa-Wa-Sum (the King, Country and the people of Bhutan) for granting us privilege to live in the pristine land and serve her pious children. We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to His Excellency T. S Powdyel and all others who devoted their holy hands, heads and hearts to publishing this splendid work and for mailing the complimentary copies to our home address by speed post so graciously.

Palden Drukpa Gyalo!!!

In his recent review published in Kuensel on May 14, 2025, the College President, Dr. Dorji Thinley, reflects on “Lopons from India: Glimpses of Their Life and Work in Bhutan” by Thakur S. Powdyel. The book brings together the stories of twenty-four Indian teachers who served in Bhutan from the 1960s onward. Their experiences remind us of the deep ties between the two countries and the quiet dedication of those who helped build Bhutan’s education system.
